Peppermint Path
The birth of this idea was the 7" Go! cutter Drunkard's Path die.
I wanted to try a 10" square on the die and see what I could create with an entire layer cake.
Supplies:
Go! cutter
7" Drunkard's Path Die
(Can also be made with the traditional drunkard's path templates)
Layer Cake Fruitcake by Basic Grey for Moda
For a larger quilt 1/3 yard pieces of 16 total red and white prints will yield a 56" X 70" quilt.
Go!
For this project I selected the 8 reds and 8 white prints from the Fruitcake line.
The way I situated them on the die was a single layer of fabric, however, I used a 10" square over each half of the die. This die is very large. It will cut 4 drunkard's path blocks at a time. In order to maximize my fabric I overlapped the 10" squares in the middle of the die by about 1/4".
Roll the fabric through the Go! cutter.
The result is 4 drunkard's path blocks by mixing and pairing the red and white prints evenly.
By alternating the rows starting with red and then white for the next row, it creates a stripe effect.
{16} 10" layer cake squares will yield a 4X4 set of blocks
If you use 1/3 yard of each print you will have an 8 X 10 set of blocks or a 56" X 70" quilt as shown.
I really wanted to have this quilt done for the blog tour.
I haven't been able to sit an sew for about 5 days though!
As soon as I have it pieced I will update the post.

thank you for showing how to use the dies. Never worked with a Layer Cake, just with Jellies. Greetings from Germany
Your Peppermint Path is so cute!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Great use of the Drunkard's Path die! Terrific quilt!
Great use of the Drunkard's Path die! Love how switching the color placement created stripes. Looking forward to seeing your finished quilt.
Great way to think outside the box!
candy canes, peppermint twists love them. love you version snd the hints about fabric placement on that particular die, love it!
Great use for a layer cake...can't get much easier than that!! love your fabric choice
I love it! I got the drunkards path die for my birthday but haven't made a quilt with it yet. I'm now inspired and will have to go and buy a layer cake!!
Love your idea with the drunkards path. I have always wanted to make a pink/cream one since I saw one years ago somewhere. I'm intimidated by curves however, so haven't begun that project. How many layers of fabric can these cutters go through? I haven't really had that question answered by this hop yet....just wondering if it can only do a single layer at atime accurately...
Gorgeous! I can tell you're enjoying the "Go" cutter! The reds and whites look great used in this fashion!
Karen
Nice idea! I love red and white and this quilt is so festive :)
peppermint path is great, wish I had the confidence to try it.
Drunkard's Path was not one of my favorite blocks ... until now. You did a great job!
The holiday fabric is just great for this pattern. I remember seeing a layer cake for the holidays....oooohhhhh now I just have to remember where...LOL.
Thanks for the post.
Smiles,

This is a great pattern for layer cakes.

What a cute quilt...I am just beginning to explore those layer cakes, jelly rolls, etc. Thanks for showing us an innovative way to use them!
I like the red and white. Thanks for showing us how it works. I've never sewn curves...I find them scary! This sure makes them look less daunting.
I love this fabric line, and will have to get this die myself.
Great selection of fabrics to do the Drunkard's Pathy die with. You make it look easy!
Love your Peppermit Path design, and Drunkard's Path is one of my favorite blocks. Great job. Thanks.

I really love the name of the quilt with your choice of fabrics.
Love your colors. I just bought the small DP, have not yet played with my new die. Guess it just got moved up my list.

I think I NEED this die! Love your quilt.
Thank you for the article on your Peppermint Path using the drunkard's path die. Looks like the GO! helps simplify the cutting dramatically. mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com
Vicki, I'm tasting peppermint now. I love, love, love your quilt. I always love red & white quilts, but I love yours even more. I know I'm going to make one soon. Inspirational.
Too funny, as in my speed reading I initially thought your reference to "{16} 10" layer cake squares" was that you used 16 layer cakes. I've not made many things with layer cakes and I initially read this that it took "16" layer cakes. Definitely gave me do a 2nd take. LOL.
Thanks for sharing & inspiring. Absolutely beautiful.
