we found...
a Stickhorn!
At first it freaked us out that we had an orange tentacle growing in our mulch....but once we figured it out..we calmed down and removed it. If you don't remove them they begin to smell like a dead carcass apparently. Thank goodness it's gone. Have you ever had one of these?

Ugh. I have never had one of those and after googling Stinkhorn...I hope to never have one! Luckily you didn't get one of the more "phallic" versions!! Double Yuck!

We get something like that with a cap on it, not sure if it is the same thing but they are gross looking. I get rid of them right away.

And how do they form to start with? Are they from too much rain? More like a mold spore? So glad it is gone for you . I have plenty of the mold spores in the mulch and even had one on the rosebush . too much water!

Never heard or seen one of those, we get some fungi under one of our plants but nothing like that. Linda

I had never heard of these until a couple of weeks ago... my neighbor had them in her yard. They grow on old (rotting) wood and her hubby had cut down a tree, but not removed the stump. Poor thing has practically dug a 10 foot square circle in her yard digging them all up. So happy you only had the one - it became a full time job for awhile for her to get rid of them.

Years ago I had an orange growth about like this one in the rock part of our yard, just appeared overnight and was soon gone on its own. Never knew what it was.

I read about one of these in my daughter's storybook last night. i thought the author had made it up! LOL. Never knew they were real. I'd panic if I found one, too. Now I'll be on the lookout.
